Let there be linen!
How one vital detail can greatly change the overall
atmosphere of any event.

here is a reason why, historically, so many events
seemed to be cookie-cutter productions. From
standard white tablecloths and their matching napkin
counterparts, to single loral centerpieces and bland china,
the events of yesteryear were often drab affairs. Luckily,
today consumers are embracing unique colors and textures
for their tabletop linen designs, creating a distinctive
atmosphere that help them stand out from the crowd.
" There is no other surface in any event space that is as
easily changed with such little effort, time and expense
and with such dramatic and impressive results, " says Michelle
Harris, business development manager at Choice
Party Linens Inc. in Prospect Park, Pa.
Mitchell Bluethman, general manager at Jomar Table
Linens in Corona, Calif., says tables are typically one of
the largest elements in a room along with possibly the
stage area (if there is one); thus, the impact of the table
linen color is dynamic and sets an immediate tone.
" The color and feel of the linens, tables and table accents
provides the backdrop for other elements including
loral, seating, signage and so forth, " Bluethman says.
" Bright and bold linens, as compared to subdued and soft
tones, help to signiicantly create atmosphere in a room
or gathering area. "
Jimmy Onello, creative director at A-1 Tablecloth Co. in
South Hackensack, N.J., notes that a simple loor-length
cloth in an interesting pattern printed on a basic polyester
fabric can drastically change the entire look of an
event. This is especially important when there is a tight
budget. In addition to table decor, simple swags of drapes
across the ceiling create a completely different ambience
and will warm up an otherwise cold, bare-looking room.
What's trending
The linen trends Onello is seeing now include muted colors
such as smoke blues, sage greens and tones of beige
and taupe. The same goes for printed patterns, including
distressed looks in these same colors.
" Texture is also very important right now, " Onello says.
" Linen and linen-look fabrics are the most requested. "
