Textile sustainability education
T
o coincide with our story on textile recycling, I wanted to write about
sustainability, such as the European Green Deal, regulations, the
proposed Digital Product Passports to track products' sustainability,
or a webinar or report that I've seen lately. But narrowing it down
seemed herculean, so I'll present some of the highlights.

Parliamentary Research Service presented background information in
March on Digital Product Passports (DPPs) to the European Parliament.

help manufacturers trace and track what's going into
their products to help businesses comply with supply
chain-related regulations and offer info on their
websites. For example, Lectra and SGS occasionally
offer webinars on topics such as sustainability
challenges and lessening your carbon footprint
throughout your supply chain. TrusTrace also offers
webinars and white papers, such as recent ones on
DPPs and Key EU Regulations for Textiles. Lectra also
recently released a traceability regulations white paper.
Organizations also publish reports about market
segments and their goals. The Apparel Impact Institute
recently released Roadmap to Net Zero 2024, which
looks at greenhouse gas emissions throughout the
industry and urges businesses to find ways to reduce

put out a report on its trials over the past three years
to address gaps in circular cotton recycling.

Speakers at the Emerging Technology Conference and Advanced Textiles
Expo in Anaheim, Calif., Sept. 23-26, are presenting on sustainability in
medicine and sustainable polymers (in addition to perennial topics PFAS,
workforce development, smart textiles and more). There's even an Advanced
Recycling Conference, Nov. 20-21, in Cologne, Germany, and online,
including sessions on physical recycling, chemical recycling of polyester
products, and evolving feedstock specifications. It's heartening to see so much
work on this problem; goals are long-term but with payoff for the planet.
