N EXPERIENCED condition-monitoring/reliability
educator once told me that,
when he started his education efforts, he
expected that the seminars/classes would
only be needed for a handful of years
because everyone would see the value,
move quickly toward the Top Quartile,
and no longer need him. It became clear
to him after that handful of years that his
educational efforts, and those of others,
would be needed for a long time.
Contributing editor Klaus Blache has
told us the same thing numerous times.
People are aware of the significnt benefits
that can be realized by moving from a
fire-fighting culture to one that is focused
on sustained reliability. It's the actual implementation that's lacking.
This state of affairs is borne out in a new
research study conducted by the Mobius
Institute and Mobius Connect, Ft. Myers,
FL (mobiusconnect.com), and co-sponsored
by Efficient Plant and others. The study,
The Keys to Reliability Improvement Success

The respondents were broken into two
groups. Group 1 is made up of top performers who employ a proactive maintenance
model that uses strong predictive practices
and a sustained culture of reliability. Group
2 is maintenance professionals that report
higher maintenance costs and safety incidents, with sub-par planning and scheduling. While the data from both groups
is useful, information from Group 1 puts
an interesting perspective on the status of
reliability leaders.
The responses that caught my eye fall

under the general question: How would you
assess your reliability culture?
The first statement is: " Everyone
understands how the organization benefits
if the plant is more reliable and performs at
a higher level. " You'd expect that the number for top-performing companies would be
85% or higher. Nope. It's 56%. That tells me,
even if a culture of reliability is established,
the education process never ends.
The need to constantly educate and
communicate is underscored with the
statement: " Everyone understands the mission/vision of the program. " The top group
can only claim that 35% of their company
employees understand what they're trying
to accomplish. Can you have an effective
culture of reliability if only a third of those
involved grasp the concept?
An axe that Klaus Blache rightfully
grinds all of the time is suggestions for
improvement, or lack thereof. His research
is supported by this study which tells us
that only half of respondents from topperforming companies feel that the workforce is encouraged to provide improvement
suggestions.
Suggestions for improvement speak to
engagement. The statement: The workforce
is actively involved in the improvement
process drew agreement from only 35% of
the top-performer respondents. Ouch!
While these results are rather disappointing, a positive view is possible. If
companies that feel they are top performers,
i.e., operating in the Top Quartile, have that
much room to grow in terms of developing
and sustaining their reliability cultures,
imagine how much more efficient and
profitable they can become.
This also tells me that the educator I
talked to a couple of years ago can relax.
