Call for Applications for California Green Medal:
Sustainable Winegrowing Leadership Awards
Applications will be accepted until Feb. 4 for the 2022 California Green Medal: Sustainable
Winegrowing Leadership Awards - now in its eighth year. California vineyards and wineries
that participate in a sustainability program can apply in four categories that recognize
outstanding achievement: Environment Award, Community Award, Business Award and
Sustainable Winegrowing Leader Award. The awards are presented by CAWG, California
Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance, Wine Institute, Lodi Winegrape Commission, Napa Green,
Napa Valley Vintners, Sonoma County Winegrowers and The Vineyard Team. greenmedal.org
Task Force Issues Press Release on Grant
The November issue of The Crush included an Oregon State University article
about a $7.65 million grant to West Coast university researchers to study the impact
of smoke exposure on grapes and wine.
The West Coast Smoke Exposure Task Force on Dec. 3 issued its own press release
detailing that research grant funding. The research project is expected to produce
new insights, strategies and tools to help winegrape growers and winemakers
prevent or better manage the damage to grape quality and wine that can result
when wildfire smoke events occur.
Proposed: Gabilan Mountains AVA
The TTB on Nov. 10 published a proposed rule in the Federal Register for the establishment
of the approximately 98,000-acre Gabilan Mountains AVA in Monterey and San Benito
counties. The proposed viticultural area lies entirely within the established Central Coast
AVA and would entirely encompass the established Mt. Harlan and Chalone AVAs. It
includes six commercially-producing vineyards and four wineries. The proposal is in
response to a petition from Parker Allen of Coastview Vineyards. Comments must be
received by Jan. 10, 2022.
