Middle Fork River Forest Preserve
3433 County Road 2700 E., Penfield
Middle Fork River Forest Preserve, 1705 acres
in northeast Champaign County, offers visitors a
campground (53 of 65 campsites have electricity),
playground, swimming beach, fishing, hiking, crosscountry
skiing, picnicking, a Waterfowl Management Area,
and renovated meeting facility. The campground accepts
online reservations.
River Bend Forest Preserve
1602 W. Mid America Rd., Mahomet
The 275-acre River Bend Forest
Preserve south of Mahomet
contains approximately 130
acres of clear water in
two lakes, one of which
is the largest public lake
in Champaign County,
and includes 2.5 miles of
forest along the Sangamon
River. The fully accessible,
Possibility Pier is great for
fishing.
Arboretum
Sangamon River Forest Preserve
2797 County Road 600 E., Fisher
Sangamon River Forest Preserve, a
160-acre gem, offers a variety of natural
features and is ideal for low-impact activities such as
picnicking, bird watching, hiking and river fishing. The
preserve hosts the Lincoln Ash Tree, one of the largest
ash trees in the state.
Kickapoo Rail Trail
The first 6.7 miles of the Kickapoo Rail Trail connects
East Urbana to Main St. in St. Joseph. The multi-purpose
recreational trail will extend 24.5 miles to Kickapoo
State Park in Vermilion County. The trail is designed for
pedestrians and bicyclists to traverse some of the most
diverse ecosystems in this part of the state, including
woodland, prairie, and wetland.

University of Illinois Arboretum

The University of Illinois Arboretum is a living laboratory
of plant collections, gardens, wooded areas, and ponds
that support teaching, research, and public service
programs of diverse units throughout the UrbanaChampaign
campus. The Arboretum sponsors students
from various campus departments to develop special
projects that enrich Arboretum programs. Arboretum
highlights include the Noel Welcome Garden, Miles
C. Hartley Selections Garden of plant evaluations,
Sesquicentennial Garden of perennials and flowering
trees, Idea Garden, American Hosta Society National
Display Garden, Japan House and her gardens, Frank Kari
Walkway, Pollinatarium,
Southern Arboretum
Woodlands, and acres of
lawns and groves. The
grounds and gardens host
cross-country races, tours,
weddings, banquets, and
informal gatherings.

natural areas are managed by the Urbana Park District,
including prairie in Meadowbrook Park, forest in Crystal
Lake Park, savanna and wetland in Weaver Park. The
Friendship Grove Nature Playscape, Wandell Sculpture
Garden, Anita Purves Nature Center, Crystal Lake Park
Family Aquatic Center, and a nine-hole disc golf course in
Lohman Park offer varied recreation options for residents
and visitors alike. Contact the Phillips Recreation Center

William M. Staerkel Planetarium

Discover the universe at the second largest planetarium
in Illinois, the William M. Staerkel Planetarium, located at
Parkland College. Using their digital projection system,
visitors can learn about the stars, planets, and more in
this immersive environment. Public shows are held on
Friday and Saturday nights, as well as summer matinees.
