CHAMPAIGN COUNTY
African American Heritage Trail
The development of the Champaign County African American
Heritage Trail made significant strides in FY22. With co-chairs
Barbara Suggs-Mason and Angela Rivers leading the way
alongside a large committee of volunteers, major milestones
were hit to fulfill the mission to educate today's residents
and visitors about the rich cultural history of a people whose
stories have been largely unrecognized, but who directly
shaped the place we call home.

highlighting the Skelton Park project and initial website
January 2022-Strategic Planning session outlining goals,
milestones, and steps to be taken to fulfill the mission.
Fundraising for the Trail began in full force. New logo was
created by Marcus Flinn highlighting numerous themes to be
found on the Trail.
Spring 2022-The History and Archives committee
designated over 20 stops that will receive interpretive signs
showcasing people, places, and events in history. Content
development commenced. Surface 51 was hired to build
a comprehensive website that will include a timeline and
detailed descriptions of Trail stops, alongside Points of Pride,
and a future home for educational materials. Many outreach
events and talks at Rotary Clubs, Champaign Public Library,
Parkland College, and more to raise awareness of the project.

Rhodes Day, and CU Days, sharing the preliminary stops
for the Trail and directing people to the website. Champaign

SUPPORTING WOMAN-OWNED
As part of our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
efforts, we partnered with Miss Market to
highlight woman-owned businesses in the
hospitality industry. We identified 63 retail and
food & drink businesses in the area that are
partially or completely owned by a woman.
The businesses can be found under the
Food & Drink and Shopping sections of our
website under the " Woman-Owned " category.
Numerous blogs and media spots specifically
featured where and how to support these
businesses including segments on ciLiving and
through our Shop Local promotions.
