What, if anything, can be done? Will Koch, Holiday World & Splashin' Safari, USA: We feel as if we’ve done much of what we can do to make our rides and operations as safe as possible. What remains is the rider behaviour. We are adding message repeaters to several of our rides in addition to our safety signage. We actually take it to the point now that if we have rider misconduct we call our security and depending on the details we either eject them from the park and ban them for a period of time or give them a written warning. The point is we let them know that this is something we take very seriously. But it’s an ongoing problem since guests are at the park to play. They think playful behaviour is ok and sometimes don’t know where to draw the line between what is safe and not safe. Maria Ines Fernandez, City Park, Colombia: We write rules for the riders, but we try and make them simple and easy to understand. If they are still misbehaving our ride operators are trained to immediately stop the ride and ask them to step aside. We probably wouldn’t ask then to leave the park, but we would say if you do this again, then maybe you have to. Dick Knoebel, Knoebel’s Amusement Park , USA: Increased emphasis on safety procedures by ride attendants is the best way to resolve this issue. It's difficult to post signage saying,“This ride could hurt you if you don't follow established procedures.” So, the alternative is through the action of the ride attendants. Michael Mack, Europa-Park/Mack Rides, Germany: Can you control the riders? I don’t know. You can display rules and educate people as much as possible in the queue line, but once the ride has started there is not much you can do to control that. You just have to ensure the ride is built in such a way that they can’t misbehave in the first place, which of course we always try to do. Dan Aylward, Magic Springs & Crystal Falls, USA: I think that’s a very accurate reflection of incidents. We take steps through signage and audio, but we also put our employees through an extensive training programme. We try to anticipate the problems rather than reacting after the fact. This is an educational process. Guests have to realise that these rides are serious equipment. Peter Osbeck, Gröna Lund, Sweden: In our park we have a Haunted House and a Fun House where people can stumble and fall on the floor. Otherwise we have hardly any accidents knock on wood .We have even rebuilt some of our attractions in order to avoid accidents. We have a daily report regarding, among other things, accidents or incidents. If something occurs more frequently we tell the ride department. Risk analysis is also extremely important. Ride producers must ask:What can happen in this attraction? Is it possible for riders to open the safety bars during a ride? Is it possible for riders to stand up during a ride even if there is a safety bar? The parks must also make a risk analysis. Everyone who operates a ride in our park is trained for their skill and must pass a test before they get a ‘drivers licence.
