that an uneasy NYK at truce exists between OEMs and their suppliers. The
partnership between NYK Line and DaimlerChrysler gives the lie to that &
argument. Phil O'Reilly and Yoshiko Higuchi DCX explained to Sam Ogle how
both companies foster the relationship. NYK first entered into serious
discussions with Daimler Benz in the mid-1990s. After two or three years
of dialogue, just keeping the contact alive, the shipping line's big
chance arrived in 1997. A meeting was held to discuss the highly-impor
tant trade lane by which Mercedes Benz vehicles were exported from Europe
to the United States. Until this point, Daimler Benz had awarded all the
business to one company, Wallenius Wilhelmsen Lines, and it wanted to
break the monopoly. Several meetings later, NYK were awarded a contract to
ship Mercedes to the port of Jacksonville, Florida on the US east coast and
Los Angeles on the west coast. The initial contract began in April 1998 and
ran until the end of 2000, recalls Phil O'Reilly, mar k eting director for
NYK Line Europe Ro-Ro. Subsequently, when we had proved ourselves on that
trade lane, we started winning other business to the Far East and the
Middle East. The core business, however, was Europe to the US. That's what
got us kick-started. The health of the relationship between the two
companies was exemplified by NYK becoming one of only 66
