L AST YE AR'S "BACK-TO-SCHOOL" ISSUE of Technology Alberta
featured a story on seven capstone projects completed by students
of the four major post-secondary institutions that train the next
generation of C.Tech.'s and C.E.T.'s, NAIT, Red Deer College (RDC),
SAIT, and Lethbridge College (LC). While we regularly receive feedback
on Technology Alberta articles from our readers, the comments on
the school projects were remarkable, and spurred Council to fasttrack a project ASET had been considering-adding an annual award
honouring the province's top end-of-program project. Our Awards
Committee ended up choosing two winners, one group from NAIT
and a second from RDC (See https://www.nxtbook.com/dawson/aset/ta_
summer_2016/index.php).
The beat goes on and this year only one team will be crowned
champions. The top group will be notified in late January and will
be invited to attend the 2018 ASET AGM in Jasper. There, they will
receive their prize and have a chance to explain their work to you, their
fellow technicians and technologists. The articles below are strippeddown versions of the full documentation-if we'd included more, this
issue would have looked like a phone book (Dear Millennials: That used
to be a thing. Really. Ed). If you're jonesing for a full technical fix, we've
posted comprehensive reports for every official entry, as well as a
few honourable mentions that almost made the cut, at aset.ab.ca/
capstone2017. With that in mind, here, in their own words with very
little help from us, are the finalists challenging for the second annual
ASET Capstone Project of the Year (CPY) Award.
