Our team created an innovative way to change cutting blades
on commercial mowers with no tooling necessary. Our design significantly decreases the time and effort needed to
change over blades on a mower. The blades can withstand
the forces of cutting grass at the rated specifications of the
lawn mower, and in worst-case scenarios, hitting objects
such as rocks or stumps.
Removing and reinstalling a lawn mower blade can be
challenging, inconvenient and dangerous. The process of
changing a blade requires an individual to gain access under the deck, fix the blade from moving and use a breaker
bar or impact to loosen the bolt securing the blade on the
spindle. When reinstalling the blade, many people are unaware of the torque specifications required to properly secure it, which prevents premature wear to the components
and maintains cutting performance. The need for special
tools and the required strength to use these tools limits
many individuals in their ability to change blades. This often
leads to neglect that hampers the cutting capabilities of the
machine or leads to the unnecessary cost of bringing the
mower to a service provider.
When selecting which steel would be best for the fabrication of the quick-change blade mechanism and blade, we
used a material selection matrix. The criteria and its implications to the project were cost, availability, carbon content,
yield strength, abrasion and corrosion resistance, mass and
machinability. With this selection process, we determined
that mild steel was the best material from which to make
the blade.

Our system consists of two different parts, the mounting
hub and the two blades. This system becomes toolless
after the one-time installation of the hub onto the mower.
To install and remove the quick-change blade system, the
first step is to take a single blade and place the hole on the
blade over one of the fixed pins on the hub so that the blade
lays flat on the hub. Next, the user rotates the blade counterclockwise around the fixed pin until it's unable to rotate
any further. As the mower deck is turned on, the centripetal
force created keeps the blades fixed to the hub and finishes
the installation process.
Our quick-change blade system eliminates the need for any
tools, allowing for quicker removal and installation. This will
reduce the safety concerns existing in the conventional
blade-changing process and encourage the user to change
the blade themselves. The simplicity of changing the blades
will optimize cutting performance as there will be no excuse not to change dull blades. The system is designed to
utilize the spinning motion created by the mower to secure
the blades during operation. This allows for the design to
be easily manufactured and assembled with minimal parts.
The design process included the application of Solidworks
CAD, finite element analysis, materials strength and dynamics calculations, 3D prototyping and CNC machine coding
for manufacturing.
