ASET a newsmaker despite a year dominated by COVID-19
ASET members have consistently made the headlines since
the inaugural, summer 2019 launch of media campaigns to
promote 2019 Capstone Project of the Year winners and finalists. It's part of ASET's commitment to showcasing the
outstanding work of its members.
Following the 2019 Capstone efforts, ASET profiled for reporters a new Canadian and ASET member, Divyesh Patel,
whose path to a career in his chosen field was streamlined
by ASET's competency-based assessment model. The story
garnered coverage in the Edmonton Journal, Edmonton Sun,
Calgary Sun, Yahoo News, MSN.com, CBC News website,
and on CHQR's "The Danielle Smith Show," CBC Edmonton's
"Radioactive" and 630 CHED's "Afternoons."
In early 2020 prior to COVID-19 upstaging other news stories, ASET illustrated the connection between technology
and art by introducing to media a couple who embodied
a successful marriage of the two: Ryan and Kathryn Blair.
Blair is an ASET member, C.E.T., and mechanical engineering technologist who, in his spare time, collaborates with
his wife, a PhD student in computational media design, to
create interactive wearable art. The couple were featured
on Global Calgary's "Global News Hour at 6," CTV Calgary's
"CTV Morning Live" and CHQR's "The Morning News."
In April, ASET highlighted one of the unsung heroes in biomedical engineering technology who's on the front lines
of the COVID-19 crisis. Caroline Mekodom, an Edmontonbased C.E.T., travels across the province and country to
install, maintain and repair medical equipment, including
automated liquid handling systems for COVID-19 tests. Her
story was reported by the Edmonton Journal, Edmonton
Sun, Calgary Herald, Calgary Sun, the Province (Vancouver), Sherwood Park News, Canada.com, MSN.com, and on
"Global News Morning Edmonton," CHQR's "The Danielle
Smith Show" and CTV Calgary's "CTV Morning Live."
With June came Father's Day and a story about one of
ASET's newest and likely youngest ever Council members:
Emilee Kaupp. Kaupp's pursuit of a career in civil engineering technology - a largely male-dominated profession - was
encouraged by her father, a chemical engineer with the City
of Lethbridge. As a child, Kaupp loved math, science and
going to work with her father at the water treatment plant.
Her story was covered by Global Lethbridge, Lethbridge
Herald, Medicine Hat News, MSN.com, Power 97 (Winnipeg),
Jump 106.9 (Ottawa) and Q107 (Calgary).

The following month, a 2020 Capstone Project of the Year
Award finalist team from NAIT grabbed the headlines thanks
to another COVID-19-related angle. Media were eager to
learn about the practical applications of Sebastian Potoniec
and Noah Neiman's automation of an indoor farm project -
especially in light of fears about food shortages.
Potoniec, a Sherwood Park resident, appeared in the Sherwood Park News and on CHQR's "The Danielle Smith Show"
and CTV Calgary's "CTV Morning Live." Neiman, a Fort McMurray native, was interviewed by Fort McMurray Today,
MyMcMurray, Mix 103.7 FM, and 93.3 Country/97.9 Rock.
The story was published in the Edmonton Journal and Farmer Rancher, and picked up by Postmedia papers across Alberta and Ontario.
At press time, ASET was concluding work on a media campaign about 2020 Capstone Project of the Year Award winner, the VISAIDE Smart Cane, developed by former NAIT
students Nathaniel Painchaud, Dan Oake and Navneet Kaler. It attracted significant attention from broadcast outlets:
Global Edmonton's "Global News Hour at 6," CBC Edmonton's "Edmonton AM," CHQR's "The Morning News," CTV
Edmonton's "CTV Morning Live," and CTV Edmonton's "CTV
News at 6" and "CTV News at 5."
