A REFLECTION OF OUR MINDS
With such impressive abilities, AI can appear to be almost
omniscient, but in the case of the AI stream of machine
learning, it's all just data entry and processing. Machine
learning uses data and algorithms to imitate the way humans
learn, essentially reflecting what's been fed to it.
" Machine learning is a subset of
AI that learns based on examples.
Those examples are data, and what
is data? I like to say it's a shadow of
human knowledge. It's an imprint;
it's a picture of what humans think
at a certain time, " Santos says.
The effectiveness of the learning model has been demonstrated
clearly by the recent launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT
app, which does what it was trained to do very well.
" ChatGPT is very good at creating stories, very good in connecting
words. I put this word, what's the next one? It can
look ahead and create a full story, but that's it. It has no consciousness,
as people might think, " he says. While ChatGPT
can make content that sounds incredibly believable, that
doesn't make it true.
" I think that's the danger of it, because it's so convincing in
writing something that, even if it's wrong, it's still very believable, "
Santos says.
" AI is not biased; people are biased.
People are biased, and data that
comes from people will be biased,
and then AI will be biased. But AI
is just connecting dots together
to predict what could be. Those
predictions could be biased because
if you don't watch for those, if
you're not aware the context of
the news, or the data that's being
trained, we can reproduce those
biases, " Santos says.
University of British Columbia Assistant Professor, Sociology,
Mike Zajko, explores this issue in an article examining
the Artificial Intelligence and Data Act (AIDA), an upcoming
piece of legislation aimed at building a regulatory system
dealing with AI implementation.
He argues that such harms aren't an accidental byproduct
of AI exploration; they're part and parcel of the corporations
using them, who by nature prioritize profit over societal wellness.
" There
are plenty of potential harms that may arise from AI
doing exactly what it was designed to do by corporations
that are hopelessly short-sighted about the greater welfare
of humanity, " he writes.
He explains that the risks of AI are usually presented as an
issue of alignment, where AI needs to be aligned properly
with human safety and advancement.
" However, framing the potential dangers this way ignores
one critical factor: AI is already aligned with a particular set
of human values and interests - those of the profit-seeking
corporations driving AI development, " he writes.
That potential already has computer scientists and techsavvy
political scientists worried about the implications of
generative AI for democratic processes, such as the 2024
US election.
To avoid such misuse of the technology, Santos holds that
it's important to have stakeholder input from a diverse range
of voices.
" That's why AI is not something for a computer scientist to
decide, " he says. " Even though I'm a PhD philosopher Doctor,
I still need a philosophy person, I need a person from
music, from Indigenous studies, in different areas, and collectively
the society, we need to say: 'How can you bring
this to help us in all possible dimensions, that can bring us
forward to the next step as a society?' "
Compounding fears of mass obfuscation from mass false
content generation are worries over jobs. Those concerns
aren't without basis, given the strikes in Hollywood over,
among other things, AI-generated digital likenesses, and 40
per cent of the staff at gaming website Destructoid laid off
(with its owning company Gamurs posting an AI editor job
listing soon after).
