Enhancements to hot mix
asphalt by the addition of
glass fibre fines

The goal of this research was to determine if
the glass fibres additive would improve the flow
and stability in asphalt, along with increasing
the strength and elasticity of the asphalt. Our
theory was that the additive would help the asphalt retain its
shape under greater loads and prevent any potential imperfections
over time.
When considering the immense impact roadways receive
when vehicles travel across the pavements, glass fibres
could help decrease the amount of stress at the point of
contact between the wheel load and the asphalt pavement,
along with improving the distribution of the stress. The main
theory of this research was to determine if the fibres would
bond with the asphalt cement in an attempt to create an asphalt
with elastic-like properties.
We went about assessing the effect of substituting glass
fibres fines for natural fines in hot mix asphalt concrete
(HMA). Natural fines are small sized aggregate used in asphalt.
It differs from glass fibres, in the elasticity properties
and the way the materials absorb the bitumen.
We conducted a sieve analysis, specific gravity, flow and
stability tests using three standard asphalt briquettes, three
modified asphalt briquettes containing 5.0 per cent glass
fibres, and another three modified briquettes containing 7.5
per cent glass fibres fines as a substitute for natural fines.
From the data we collected, we determined that when there
is an optimum glass content of 5.0 per cent, there is an increase
in density, which creates a more durable mixture. A
more durable mixture prompts less deformation, meaning
it will become more resistant to the six big pavement distresses
of fatigue cracking, bleeding, block cracking, potholes,
ravelling, and rutting. As well, the mixture resists an
equal load compared to a standard aggregate mixture. It
was shown that a higher glass fibre content of 7.5 per cent
causes a reduction in stability and therefore, creates a mixture
that is less resistant to loads.
With how glass fibres improved the durability and imperviousness
of the mixture, a reduction of flow was found. This
is a promising result since there will be less deformation
and a lower chance for imperfections to occur. A flow that is
too low would not be ideal, as the mixture would then have
less workability. This would create difficulties with paving
roadways, potentially damaging equipment in the process.
