Comparison of CFD Simulation
Software to Wind Tunnel Testing

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is one
of the most widely used fields of study in our
world. It has a wide range of applications, allowing
companies across the industry to solve
complicated problems needed to use fluid properties. We
wanted to use this project to take our studies further, into
wind dynamics. We have been provided the basis for the
calculations that define fluid dynamics, and with this project
we could apply them in a more practical setting.
We hypothesized that if the CFD software produced a wind
load simulation that is accurate to the physical model, then
there would be a relationship between analytics of the two
settings. If the CFD software produced a wind load simulation
that was not accurate to the physical model, then there would
be no relationship between analytics of the two settings.
Autodesk CFD (2023) is the software we used to perform
our digital testing as it works well with Autodesk Inventor.
We isolated the temperature, pressure, speed, and turbulence
variables that we could control in the physical model
to keep them as close to the CFD as possible, as well as
researching and optimizing the enclosure design for our
wind tunnel. Using the information collected, our modelsized
wind tunnel was constructed to replicate parameters
simulated in software. To observe the similarities between
the software-generated and the physical models, great care
was taken to observe the behaviour of air movement under
replicated environments. This gave us valuable information
on the flow of fluid air around our model and provided a
baseline for future trials.
The physical tunnel was tested at Lethbridge College. We
performed our tests in a room with a ventilation system.
Models were placed in the centre of the acrylic tunnel and
because all models had similar dimensions, our tubes for
measuring pressure differences before and after the models
were in the same location.
The model of the wind tunnel was recreated using Autodesk
Inventor with the same dimensions and parameters applied,
then exported to Autodesk Computational Fluid Dynamics.
To interpret results in Autodesk CFD, we could create crosssectional
planes at specific locations within the wind tunnel
and adjust them accordingly with respect to either XY, XZ, or
YZ axes. These planes included a colour spectrum legend
that represented how the magnitude of the specific variable
varied throughout the tunnel, while retaining to specific units.
Based on our findings and results from our tests, we concluded
that the CFD software was able to produce a virtual
model accurately to that of the physical wind tunnel. In addition,
the software was able to compensate for variables that
we could not measure during our physical tests, like pressure.
The software also helped us to determine our values
for average speeds after the objects.
Unfortunately, our study lacked depth of data due to major
time constraints. The effects of the parts of the model wind
tunnel on testing variables would need additional analysis to
ensure conclusive test results. Designing a wind tunnel is an
extensive undertaking and requires its own research study.
