Night Knight

Night Knight is a lightweight, portable, and kidfriendly
device built to offer advanced features
such as movement detection, temperature, and
humidity sensing. The project was created to
provide parent(s)/guardian(s) with a child between the ages
of four to ten the ability to monitor the child's wellbeing
when they are asleep through an application and the provided
device.
All the sensor data is sent to an application on the parent(s)/
guardian(s) phone where the temperature and humidity is
numerically represented, while the motion detection is visually
represented, and tallied in a table each hour. The Night
Knight project was made to help the parent(s)/guardian(s) to
monitor the ambient room temperature and humidity along
with the child's movement through an application connected
to the provided device.
The device for Project Night Knight is a bear. The bear houses
the circuit containing the power supply, Arduino NANO,
HC05, motion detection sensor, and the temperature and
humidity sensors. The entire circuit board is hidden inside
the bear, and consists of the Arduino NANO and the Bluetooth
module, HC05, encased in a personally designed 3D
printed container. The circuit is powered by a 9V battery that
was also hidden inside the bear.
The power supply used for Night Knight is a 9V rechargeable
1300 mAh lithium-ion battery. This specific battery
was selected for the project since the max current output
is about 135 mAh, allowing the device to run for about nine
hours (with charging available for longer run times).
An Arduino NANO is the selected microcontroller to be used
for Night Knight. Night Knight requires the circuit to fit inside
a teddy bear, so a smaller circuit is required. The NANO operates
at 5V, requiring an input voltage of 7 - 12V, and has
eight analog pins and 14 digital pins.
A PIR motion detection sensor is used for motion detection.
This specific motion sensor was selected for Night Knight
because it is infrared since this project is meant to used in
the night as the child is asleep.
The other sensor used in Night Knight is the DHT11 ambient
temperature and humidity sensor. The DHT11 has a temperature
range of 0 - 50°C with an accuracy of ±1°C and a
humidity range of 20 - 90 per cent with an accuracy of ±1
per cent.
The application for Night Knight was created through MIT
App Inventor and follows a simple user interface with three
screens: initialization screen, user's guide screen and data
output screen.
Once the Night Knight application has been connected to
the device via Bluetooth, it will begin to output live data that
the sensors detect. The device forms a Bluetooth connection
through the Arduino NANO with HC05 and in the Arduino
code.
Since a lot of testing had already been done before completing
the assembly of the project, everything functioned
properly as expected.
Although Night Knight did meet all the general requirements
with expected performance, there are a few limitations to the
project: ability of the application, the iOS, and the temperature
sensor. Applications created through MIT App Inventor
are unable to run in the background, meaning the user must
have the phone on with the application opened to be able to
receive any alarms. MIT App Inventor-created apps are only
supported by Android devices, so the Night Knight application
is unavailable on Apple devices. Finally, with the DHT11
to measure the ambient temperature instead of the child's
direct temperature, Night Knight's project parameters had
to be altered to meet the general project requirements.
