Comparison analysis of detailed

This project aimed to determine the best surveying
method for the construction industry,
depending on the scope of different scenarios,
by comparing terrestrial and aerial surveying
methods' efficiency and accuracy.
By comparing and evaluating two survey methods used for
volumetric measurement and mapping of various features
through identifying each method's strengths and limitations,
their accuracy, precision, and time management,
the results of this study can help professionals, researchers,
and stakeholders in different fields. Those in mining,
construction, civil engineering, and environmental management
can use this data to choose the most suitable and efficient
survey method for their specific needs. The research
can also raise the curiosity for new studies examining other
aspects not discussed in this investigation.
To address the debate of aerial versus terrestrial methods,
the project compared two subjects of this dilemma: accuracy
and efficiency of terrestrial and aerial surveying methods,
on the Alpine Park residential project site in Calgary.
The project involved analyzing the volumetric amounts of
surplus earth material piles at Alpine Park, using terrestrial
and aerial surveying methods. The team gathered coordinates
and photographs from the surveys to process the data
and create maps, terrain models, and calculate volumes. In
addition, the team evaluated the costs and time invested in
both surveying methods.
The methods used for this report included aerial photogrammetry,
a terrestrial GNSS RTK rover, and three processing
software. We used a Real-Time Kinetic (RTK) enabled drone:
the DJI Matrice 300 RTK. For the terrestrial survey, we used
a Leica GNSS RTK GS18 rover and the Leica CS20 Field
Controller. The processing software used included Civil
Tracker, Pix4D Mapper and Civil3D.
The investigative plan consisted of carrying out the comparison
through the technical analysis of the criteria for surveying
methods on site at Alpine Park community development.
For the use of drones for surveying, it was indeed possible
to verify its superiority in terms of precision of results and
speed in the execution of the task entrusted, since the reading
it offers is in pixels of approximately 1cm to 2cm. This
ensures a lecture of the variations of terrain in a higher way,
or what is called more accurate. On the other hand, and by
this, its use cannot be justified for all types of surveying tasks
due to its high cost of rent or acquisition or the obligation for
qualified personnel to perform the maneuver. Still, it is the
right choice if the equipment and personnel are available.
Using drone surveying in the construction industry is a
game-changer, providing more accurate data, faster surveys,
and increased efficiency. Nevertheless, the project's
results provided valuable insights into the use of both methods
in the construction industry, and the recommendations
can assist in making informed decisions on which surveying
methods best fit any future project.
Overall, drone surveying provides significant advantages
over traditional RTK methods for calculating volumes. Its
accuracy, precision, and efficiency make it an excellent
choice for construction projects that require calculations
of volumes of materials such as topsoil, rock, clay and silt.
With the ability to calculate volumes, drone surveying can
help construction businesses save time and resources, and
make more informed project decisions quickly and accurately.
Alternatively, the RTK rover is very effective in the
speed and storage of information. It is also perfect for quick
and easy volume analysis tasks, where accuracy is not a
high priority.
