ASET Technology Alberta Spring 2016 - 22

presi dent's awa rd Christopher Warren, Q.C. A s an appointed Public Member of the ASET Council from 2005 to 2015, Christopher Warren, Q.C., brought dedication and expertise as he represented the interests and safety of Albertans. Originally from Delburne, AB, Warren attended Red Deer College from 1973-75. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree with Distinction from the University of Alberta in 1976, majoring in history and political science, then obtaining his Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Alberta in 1979. After articling in Edmonton, Warren moved back to Red Deer and was one of the three founding partners of his current firm, Warren Sinclair LLP - practicing in the areas of Estate Planning, Corporate and Commercial Law, and Real Estate, serving primarily agricultural clients, business clients and financial institutions. In 1998, he was appointed Queen's Counsel. When he was initially recruited to Council, ASET still operated under the Societies Act. A specific issue of the legislation restricted ASET disciplinary actions to fines not exceeding $5.00. Without the status of being professionals, the limitations imposed by the Societies Act made protection of the public an unrealistic goal. Furthermore, even though ASET members worked alongside engineers, ASET members had no authority to authorize and complete projects involving the application of existing technology. "In a province facing a lack of skilled professionals, the cost to business was significant," recalls Warren. "My initial efforts were focused on strategies to make the Government understand the cost of these inefficiencies." 22 | WINTER 2016 | TECHNOLOGY ALBERTA After ASET was recognized as a self-governing professional body, he shifted his focus to the protection of the public by ensuring ASET was accountable without negating the benefits of being a self-regulating body. Those steps included development of policies for committees, obtaining liability insurance for ASET members and providing oversight. In addition to his role on the ASET Council, he also served in a variety of Board positions throughout Alberta, including: Director, High Arctic Energy Services Inc., where he is Chair of the Governance and Nominating Committee; and, Chair of the Governance and Nominations Committee and a member of the Human Resources Committee for the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) Board. And to add to his already full schedule, Christopher is also actively involved in a number of charities and service clubs in the Central Alberta community. "Receiving the award from my ASET colleagues and friends is humbling and unexpected," Warren states. "My ASET experiences and successes we have enjoyed together will always be a favored memory." For his years of service and commitment to serving the public interests of Albertans, Christopher Warren, Q.C., is presented with the President's Award.
