DOING THINGS BETTER. That's

Todd spent a lot of time in the field, learning how the
equipment worked and came to grips with two profound
truths about himself: He always wants to do things better,
and can't stand doing the same thing twice. These realities
were to shape his future.
From Schlumberger he went to Siemens in Southern
Ontario, providing a broad range of offerings to diverse
clients, including the auto industry and the health sector.
This led to another important revelation: The oil and gas
sector is far more adaptable and able to adopt innovative
techniques and equipment than many other industries.
He then moved on to a five-year stint with Weatherford,
the first four years of which were spent in Houston, fusing
the company's wireline services with those of Precision
Drilling (Energy Services), which it had just purchased.
By the time Todd left Texas in 2009, the merged entities'
combined revenue had doubled to US $900M.
His next challenge was moving to Calgary to run
Weatherford's Canadian businesses, which he enjoyed
for 18 months. When he left in December 2010, he was
responsible for a billion dollars in contracts and the
welfare of 4,300 employees. A month later, he was sitting
at his kitchen table, developing a business plan on his
older daughter's laptop, with only himself as an employee.
It was a leap of faith.
The catalyst for this seismic change was that a
former Weatherford colleague had come across a
European technology based on extracting a "big effect"
from a small energy source. While sounding like science
fiction, this high-pulse power technology had actually
been developed by a former European state-sponsored
research facility entering the private sector and seeking
practical commercial applications for its work. Todd's
backgrounds in physics and the oil sector combined to
'spark' an idea. Oil extraction typically requires a highpowered event to separate the crude from rock, usually
deep underground and accessible from a distance
through a small access point. He kept going back to the
video of the European lab's work, trying to figure out a
real-world application, eventually focusing on the fact
that tens of thousands of oil wells around the globe
require remediation. What tends to happen is that once
30 per cent of the oil has been extracted, the boreholes
become clogged with debris. Continued operation then

to do when growing up in Deep River,
ON, the bedroom community supporting
Ontario's Chalk River nuclear energy hub.
He was the kid who took all his mum's
appliances apart but DIDN'T reassemble
them. Once he knew how they worked,
he lost interest. That predilection for
wanting to understand things, coupled
with a childhood surrounded by brilliant
scientists-school field trips consisted
almost exclusively of reactor visits-
led almost inevitably to the Physics
degree he completed at the University of
Waterloo in 1991.
So how does a physicist who grew
up 200 km northwest of Ottawa end up
in the oil patch? "I somehow ended up
at a career fair," Todd explains. "And
there was a Schlumberger display where
the recruiter was talking about some
equipment he'd taken with him to show
people. I chatted with him to understand
their use for the same equipment we had
in our physics lab. And I was fascinated
to hear about practical applications that
would never have occurred to me. One
thing led to another, and he suggested I
apply, since my knowledge base seemed
relevant. I got the job and it launched a
career I've enjoyed ever since."
