REDEFINING YOUR NICHE is
not something most individuals ever
consider, let along most businesses.
That's all the more true for machining
shops, particularly if that growth means
providing comprehensive design and
engineering services to help out their
clients when their products need
improvement. But then, when you have
business owners the likes of Karma's,
you're dealing with a special breed.
Founder David deJong, P.Eng., and his
partner, Darryl "Shorty" Short, C.E.T., are
professionals who have the chops to seek
out and challenge opportunity head-on.
As Bruce Dickinson's quote notes, you build engineers
and technologists by letting kids get their hands dirty.
Dave was one such kid-like so many of our readers.
He always liked building stuff or taking apart his parents'
toasters and blenders to see how they worked. It's no
surprise, then, that when he graduated from Edmonton's
Harry Ainlay High School in 1984, he had completed the
vocational electronics program, in anticipation of a career
devoted to, as he puts it, "Making stuff work."
Engineering at the University of Alberta seemed a
logical next step, though early on he did switch from
electrical to mechanical, feeling it was more in line with
his interests. Because part of his studies were sponsored
by the Royal Canadian Air Force, Dave spent time in the
summer instructing air cadets and he developed a taste
for teaching. This prompted him to consider an academic
career but he felt his value as a professor would climb if he
gained some industry experience first.
