ASET Technology Alberta Spring 2017 - 6

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Defining Who We Are
Sandra Pippus, C.E.T.

E

arlier this spring I joined the leadership of the engineering
and geoscience technologist professional associations
across Canada in Halifax. This was an excellent opportunity
for me to see the diversity and passion among the Presidents and
CEOs across Canada. Although some of our partner associations
have different sizes and mandates, everyone has the best interest
of the public and the profession.

After the meeting, I was reflecting on the great work ASET members
have done that could help lift the profession nationally. There were
several topics raised at the meeting that were relevant to this end,
but none more important than competency-based assessment.
This mode of assessment allows ASET to recognize technicians
and technologists and help them achieve certification without
returning to school for academic upgrading. This process benefits:
* Graduates of non-accredited academic programs;
* Senior practitioners; and,
* Internationally-trained professionals.
The benefit for ASET is clear, but why does competency-based
assessment matter to employers, ASET members and the public?

Employers
* There is a trend among employers to require certification and
the competency-based assessment process creates a path
to certification that benefits them with their experienced
employees and in their search for technical professionals.
* The competency profiles could easily establish clear job
descriptions and performance expectations for employees,
which can impact job satisfaction and reduce turnover.
* The technical elements of the profiles could help employers
identify the knowledge and skill areas necessary for
technicians and technologists in their organization, which in
turn can assist with recruitment and retention.
* The competency profiles can be used as a guide for
professional development, on the job training and career
advancement for their employees.
* Employers may find the competency profiles useful for
identifying job standards and performance appraisal targets.
* With tight-to-no training budgets, the competency profiles
can help employers with targeting specific professional
development activities needed to improve any gaps in the
knowledge and skills of their employees and thereby improve
the relevance and cost-effectiveness of these activities.

ASET members
* Public safety is the first tenant of the ASET Code of Ethics and
the assessment process for the three categories of potential
applicants' works towards this goal.
*  Student technologists and technologists-in-training can use
the competency profiles as a roadmap to assist with gaining
the necessary knowledge and experience for certification in
Alberta and towards their legislative compulsory professional
development plans.
* Members can use the competency profiles to advocate for
formal training opportunities or in-house assignments that
allow for additional development of specific knowledge and
skill areas.
* Discussing the competency profile and/or the results of ASET's
competency assessment from ASET with a practitioner's
supervisor can open up dialogue for the purposes of performance
appraisals and discussions regarding career advancement.

Public
* Public safety is a priority of ASET and government, and
having certified professionals through a competency based
assessment process meets that mandate.
* The competency profiles are publicly available and walk
through the knowledge and skill set the public should expect
from high-performance, certified practitioners.
* ASET's competency profiles identify key knowledge and
skill areas relevant to a discipline of practice. This may help
practitioners to identify strengths and weaknesses for the
purposes of personal and professional development.
This work will be ongoing as it is continuously improved and
evolves to keep up with changes to the profession, to technology,
and to society.  None of this is possible without the volunteer
efforts of hundreds of ASET members over the past four years
that have put in countless hours to ensuring our standards are
innovative, robust, and with a meaningful process.  I am proud to
share its merits with my counterparts across Canada. 

Sandra Pippus, C.E.T.
