NAIT IS ADAPTING TO
MEET CHANGING REALITIES
TECHNOLOGY ALBERTA RECENTLY HAD a chance to sit
down and catch up with David Zdebiak, Associate Dean,
Academic, of NAIT's School of Applied Science and Technology, as he was taking a breather at the end of another school
year-though, to be frank, there's no such thing as a summer
break anymore at Alberta's polytechnics. Programming options are available 12 months out of 12. And that's just one
of the changes facing the province's post-secondary sector.

like the break is welcome.
Anytime. And you're right, it's been a busy year so looking
back over a cup of coffee is a nice change of pace.
So how did the academic year go at NAIT?
All things considered, it went well. Some unexpected highs
and lows, as usual, but overall-very satisfactory.

Anything in particular that stands out?
Sure. A number of things, actually. First, and this will
be of interest to your readers, five of our diploma programs-Biomedical Engineering Technology, Electronics
Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Chemical Engineering Technology, and Geological
Technology-underwent their TAC accreditation audits in
April. We're very pleased with how they went.
Five? In one month? That's a lot of work.
Actually, it was over a two-week period. And yes, it was a
lot of work but our department heads, academic chairs,
and faculty did an outstanding job preparing. Still a few
programs left but things are under control. What's been
the most challenging is that we made a conscious, strategic decision early on to align our curriculum review and
renewal (CRR) processes with the TAC accreditations. But
we really had to if we wanted our revamped program curricula to be captured by the audits.
