Mentoring
a career advantage
for foreign-trained
and new professionals
When you're starting out in a new
profession, the road ahead may
be foggy, even intimidating. Or, if
you've already got the skills and
experience but are newly arrived from
another country, you may find the
terrain unfamiliar, hard to navigate.
Certification offered by a professional
association like ASET will help
smooth the transition. But sometimes
a helping hand from someone who
knows the business and has been
there can also be a game changer.
ASET, whose first in Canada, made in Alberta competency-based assessment program gives foreign-trained engineering technology professionals a direct path into careerrelated work, has a second tool designed to help newcomers
and non-newcomers succeed in the job market: its mentoring program.
Established within the last decade, the ASET mentoring program facilitates mentoring partnerships with students, junior ASET members, and foreign-trained professionals who
seek in-depth career advice and support.
Research confirms effectiveness
of mentoring programs
A report, funded in part by Citizenship and Immigration Canada, says that immigrant mentees significantly improved their
economic standing twelve months after mentoring. On average, unemployment decreased from 73 per cent at the time
of mentoring to 19 per cent twelve months later. Full-time
earnings increased from $36,905 to $59,944, an improvement of 62 per cent.
According to a Forbes magazine article about a survey by
the American Society for Training and Development, 75 per
cent of executives say mentoring has been critical to their
career development.
In the summer 2019 issue of Technology Alberta, ASET
president Don Wilson reflected on the value of being mentored in his own career, and that of giving back by mentoring others.
"Mentorship is not for everyone but it can make an enormous difference in the progression of, and rewards associated with, one's career," said Wilson.
