The centre aims to have those in positions of influence (and
anyone else in the field) refer to its research findings, and
make evidence-based decisions to consolidate Alberta's
future spot as an agricultural power player.

" We would love to be helping create
policies that the government says,
'Yeah, this will actually help us foster
a better business environment within
Alberta, for example, or Western
Canada, that brings in more capital and
makes the environment more suitable
for small and medium sized companies
and start ups,' " Spencer says.

" We need to adopt agriculture or apply
technologies to agriculture in order
to be able to increase productivity
on exactly the same land base with
less water and probably less nutrition
too, because what we need to do
is become more environmentally
sustainable as we're going along. "
The house of future food security is slowly getting built, and
many of those bricks are in Albertan hands.

Ultimately, the development of agricultural technology is
not just for convenience, or profit. As Kreplin explains, the
big steps toward building the farm of tomorrow need to
happen today.
" If we take a look around the globe, the land base that we have
for agricultural production is pretty much fixed, " she says.
