Message from
the President
Ray Wilkinson, C.E.T.
As the end of my term serving as ASET president approaches, I can confidently say this has been a term like no other.
Beyond our continued efforts to elevate our members and
the profession, none of us would have thought we would be
doing so during a pandemic.
While we all navigated through COVID-19, we continually contended with new information about the virus, symptoms, containment measures, proper hand-washing, space
requirements for social distance, and when and where to be
using masks. At the same time, we have had to adapt our
daily routines and use new communication technologies to
help us continue as best we could. Remote working to reduce transmission emptied out many of our public and professional spaces of their usual crowds.
Regardless, we still made some significant strides this year.
Our mission of course is to continue discussions around
self-regulation, scope of practice rights and interprovincial
mobility legislation for technicians and technologists. We
are always working with our provincial government representatives, helping them understand the value technology
professionals bring to Alberta. We have seen progress in
other provinces, and we will never stop working towards our
ultimate goals.
We finished the year by celebrating the capstone projects of
Alberta's technology program graduates. These projects highlighted both the technical capabilities of our students, and the
Alberta education centres that provide these capabilities.
As the technology around us has grown considerably, it is
with great pride that I have represented a group of members
on the Council and the committees, who constantly strive to
improve themselves, and work for the betterment of the association. In particular, I would like to recognize our many
volunteers, near and far, who regularly support ASET. This
year was like no other, and your commitment speaks to the
strength of our organization.
We are all working within
a changed Alberta, and
I look forward to participating
in our continued growth in
the years to come.
Over the past year, I have been happy to witness Technology Professionals Canada welcome more sister associations
from other provinces into the alliance. An expanded, unified
body will work in our profession's favour, better protecting
the public by regulating the conduct of technology professionals nation-wide. As a result, Technology Accreditation
Canada continues to expand and complete accreditations
across Canada for new programs.
