When we talk about volunteerism, we're talking about a distinct and profound approach to citizenship. We're talking
about the personal acceptance of responsibility for our joint
enterprises, and indeed responsibility for one another. The
Oxford Dictionary says that a volunteer is " a person who voluntarily takes part in an enterprise or who offers his or her
services in any capacity. " Our society is built on that, isn't
it? Even our government is ultimately by volunteers, and all
around us examples flourish.
Volunteers' efforts get things done. We're built on collaborative effort and on the impulse to help and support one
another. So, when we honour ASET volunteers, it's no small
thing. We celebrate the kind of people who make our whole
society work. We all appreciate someone who " steps up. "
This month we draw attention to a very special group of
volunteers - those who express their willingness to serve
on ASET Council, as leaders of the profession. In this issue
of Technology Alberta, we showcase all the candidates for
election, and express our appreciation for their willingness
to serve. We ask also that you do your part, to consider conscientiously who among them best fits the needs of our association at this moment - and to vote for them.
The role of Council cannot be overstated. It helps guide the
direction of policy, strategy and governance on behalf of all
the members of the profession, in the interests of the public.
It requires much of them: commitment of time, of mental energy and of passion. I call on you to take part in our election, to
choose wisely... and to thank all those who stand for office.
