Message from the ASET Foundation Chair
THE ASET EDUCATIONAL AND SCHOLARSHIP
FOUNDATION (ASET Foundation), has celebrated over
three decades of support for science and engineering technology
students in Alberta. The foundation has grown to
provide 13 scholarships and bursaries through NAIT, SAIT
and Lethbridge College, and four scholarships directly from
the ASET Foundation, with over $34,000 of support each
year going to students in science and technology programs.
The last two years we have seen a great change in our way
of lives that has been very disruptive to students and industry
professionals and has had a significant impact on how
we look to the future and plan for change. The ASET Foundation
supports individuals who are dedicated to their studies,
contributors to their communities, and achievers of high
academic standing. The scholarships and bursaries they receive
can often mean the difference between hardship and
stability while they are completing their studies.
The recipients of awards in 2021 were among some great
candidates and it can be difficult to select a single winner
among them. Speaking with a few of the winners, I heard
how important these funds are to them and how it contributes
to their overall ability to provide for themselves and
their families while completing their education. I wish we
had more to give to people like them, and it would be great
to be able to give additional awards and scholarships away
as the ASET Foundation continues to grow.
As a technologist myself, I have seen firsthand how important
science and technology professionals are to organizations
and industry in Alberta. Technologists are responsible
for contributing to industries all the way from infrastructure
to biotechnology, and as the world becomes more technologically
advanced it is likely to see more industries require
the skills and expertise of technologists. Looking at some
of the capstone projects at NAIT, SAIT and Lethbridge College
over the years, the innovation that comes from these
students is helping to change our world, and most of these
students are just getting started in their careers. They are
innovators and dreamers who, given the right support and
mentorship, can achieve great success and become leaders
in society. It's inspiring to think of what the next science
and technology innovations coming out of these institutions
might be.
As the new chair of the ASET Foundation,
it is my great honour to be able to help
contribute to the success of students in
their studies. I look forward to helping
lead the ASET Foundation through the
next phase of its growth, and I want to
thank those who have helped make the
ASET Foundation what it is today. The
ASET Foundation's goals are to grow in
the coming years with new membership
and donors to provide additional
scholarships and bursaries to students
with larger award values.
I encourage everyone to show support for the next generation
of science and engineering technology professionals.
