MY TERM AS ASET'S PRESIDENT has been marked
by an increase in momentum for our goals, through the vigilant
conservation of our existing strategies, and the implementation
of promising new ones.
One of these was ASET's rollout last fall of the Alberta Retired
Teachers' Association's Technology Professionals
Benefit Plan. I had a retired member connect with me and
tell me not to ever give up my membership due to the insurance,
and I don't mean home or auto insurance or the
$50K in professional liability insurance. This new option is a
great program for members to take advantage of, especially
if they don't have these benefits. Please check out our coverage
of the launch for more information.
We've also bolstered our member outreach activities,
through initiatives like more volunteer appreciation nights,
the ASET STEM Camp Series and the relaunch of the annual
ASET Golf Tournament. The members have reflected
our own enthusiasm for these events. They've shown up in
significant numbers, and confirmed the desire for solidarity
and community within our profession.
While there are many promising endeavours we've made to
improve your membership, I've also heard your concerns,
and would like to address those here. One thing I wanted to
address is premiums. Cost of living continues to increase,
something I'm sure we're all painfully aware of. ASET remains
competitive with other provincial associations, although after
a pause during the pandemic, C.E.T. (A.Sc.T.) rates increased.
Below is an outline showing rates of other provincial associations,
to show how ASET compares.

I have been informed several times that the CPD (Continuing
Professional Development) causes friction with some members.
I was recently randomly audited myself, and the process
was fairly simple. Nowadays, almost all professional
associations have a requirement of CPD. If they haven't yet
implemented a CPD framework, with upcoming legislation
they will certainly be required to. Keeping up on our professional
development is one of our duties as professionals.
While I am positive we all are completing CPD tasks each
year, it's equally important to document them. ASET requires
these continued development efforts to be recorded
in the CPD logbook. By seeking to personally grow and improve
our skillsets, we are better prepared to serve.
Lastly, we at ASET are preparing for the upcoming legislative
review. The work for proper recognition in the legislation
may be strenuous, but it's as important as ever. Sometimes
we expect things to move quickly, but unfortunately, they do
not. There are signs across the country of promise, though.
Thank goodness some of our neighbours (New Brunswick)
have already moved forward with a scope of practice, and
others (BC) are in the process of working this out. I'm confident
our government will soon follow.
I am proud of my time in the president's chair and working
with this year's Council. I feel we accomplished a great
deal. While we still have many obstacles to overcome, I've
been told good things take time, and I think we have some
great things coming up. Emilee Kaupp is eager to jump into
the president's seat, and I look forward to supporting her
as needed. Emilee is enthusiastically engaged in Council,
and I'm confident in the direction she'll take us in the year
ahead.
