ASET stands by its finding from our studies and consultations. The competenciesbased standards developed by ASET in some years of rigorous consultation with subject matter experts and psychometricians are nation-leading and state of the art. The educational standards in our polytechnic institutions and colleges in this province are exceptional, and graduates have been educated to national technology education standards developed specifically for this unique profession. That profession is recognized by the province's syllabus development for those selfsame institutions - aimed at development of a distinct profession. Recognition of: the commitment to competency and quality, to public safety and to the use of specialized knowledge in the public interest; and recognition of the unique place and capacities of this profession, is essential to the modernity and effectiveness of this province. Recognition of this profession in a definition and scope of practice is well overdue. Albertans are entitled to know who is qualified to do a thing, and to be able to get them to do it. It's time.
