These two types of testing are the backbone of what those
in materials do. NDT allows for the inspection of materials
without damaging them. Radiography, magnetic particle inspection,
and dye penetrant testing are a few examples of
NDT. The destructive side, meanwhile, is implied in its name.
It entails figuring out the failure point of certain materials by
stressing them until they break or deform. Think finding out
the corrosion level or tensile strength of a metal by exposing
it to particular stressors. While DT is generally used more in
the design phase of a product, NDT is often conducted on
equipment in use to stop early signs of trouble.
The lab has a wealth of both. Triolaire demonstrated a
few of these in action throughout the tour. He booted up
a tensile testing machine, or universal testing machine
(UTM) and secured a small, bullet-shaped piece of metal
between two grips. Once the material was stretched to its
limit, it broke in two with a pop, providing information on
its tensile failing point. He next demonstrated a pendulum
impact tester, by placing a material under a pendulum with
a hammer that looked like it belonged in a funhouse. The
hammer was then swung into the material, snapping it. This
machine can use the results of that simple hammer slam to
find out how much damage the material being tested can
absorb before failure.
Among the NDT applications, Triolaire performed ultrasonic
testing, dry magnetic particle inspection, dye penetrant inspections,
and a dozen others. Each of these processes reveals
different information about imperfections on the surface
of and throughout a material.
Another magnet-based tester at the lab is their magnetic
particle wet bench, which on first glance looks like a futuristic
bathtub complete with curtain and faucet. The test itself
is conducted to find defects on ferromagnetic materials
like iron, nickel and alloys. Triolaire explained that this tool
can multidirectionally magnetize a part under inspection.
The part is then bathed in a special oil or water and lit up
by a fluorescent light. During the demonstration, the light
revealed the various defects marking the surface and nearsurface
on the sample part.
All these different tools make materials testing seem like a
kind of forensics investigation, Triolaire notes.
" It's maybe like CSI kind of stuff, where we're doing an investigation,
and sometimes you could get involved in court cases
and lawsuits and stuff like that too, " Triolaire says. " When a
part does fail, then it'll get sent to a metallurgy lab and they'll
do a failure analysis and they'll find out what happened. Was
it a material defect that caused the failure? Was it the operator?
Was he misusing the component? Was he overloading it? "
