With regard to mentoring my own mentees, there are only a
few things solidly on the agenda, such as having a life balance list - a specific process for managing one's time. I also
ensure that mentees fulfil their goals by planning, tracking
and becoming fully qualified to do the things they wish to do
when selected to do so. Mentorship is not for everyone but
it can make an enormous difference in the progression of,
and rewards associated with, one's career.
What more can or should be done to ensure the
transferability of technology skills over provincial,
even national borders?
While the transferability of technology skills over provincial
borders has been legally secure for a while, it may have
been threatened at some point by people's attitudes. This
may have improved since ASET's involvement in the establishment of Technology Professionals Canada (TPC) and its
offshoot, Technology Accreditation Canada (TAC). TPC and
TAC have brought congruency to accreditation and uniformity across Canadian technology standards, replacing an
old system that had dwindled toward obsolescence.
As someone who has been part of the engineering
technology scene for more than three decades, what
advice would you give to a young woman or man
considering starting a career in this profession?
Let me say this adamantly: you will get out of your career in
engineering technology what you put into it. I have found that
my career and association with other technology professionals have overall become much more valuable than a title as
I have become more deeply engaged in the industry I serve.
The most satisfying reward has come from work in mentorship, leadership, industry associations, education (as both a
student and a teacher), and now as ASET president.
