vs. COVID-19
SOLUTIONS IN TIMES OF PANDEMIC
There's a historical pattern we
can see where monumental
technological innovation comes
during times of crisis. Necessity
and invention share a close
bond, and we need to look no
farther than the space age
technology that came about
in the mid-twentieth century
as proof of this trend. Health
technologies are no exception.
The world is currently engaged in a pandemic, one that's resulted
in millions of infections and hundreds of thousands of deaths.
If the time has come for necessity-based invention, that time is
now. Institutions across the world have been developing novel
techniques for this novel virus.
The research they've made has included digitization of health
systems, more precise data gathering and the artificial
intelligence technique of machine learning. Each of these
technologies has since expanded, either in theoretical insights or
real-world applications (both for COVID-19 and for future health
matters).
The MIT-IBM Watson Lab, for example, recently announced
plans to fund 10 AI-based projects at MIT. These projects range
from detection software for sepsis, a common complication of
COVID-19, to the design and construction of proteins that could
block the virus from attaching to human cells.
Innovators in Alberta are also at work looking into solutions
around machine learning and other tech. The Alberta Machine
Intelligence Institute (AMII) announced in April that it would be
contributing to three new tech initiatives aimed at lessening
COVID's impact. One of these projects, "CODEVID-19" is a
hackathon that began in Edmonton. The hackathon is described
as "an Edmonton-based, grassroots hackathon building rapid
solutions to problems facing all citizens during the pandemic,"
and drew in "more than 1,600 developers and domain experts
from 40 countries."
While a number of new innovations have popped up to respond
to our current situation, another branch in the battle comes from
pre-existing inventions that could be retrofitted to have a more
pandemic-relevant purpose. Kelvin Summoogum created one of
these tools.
