NAIT adds nanotechnology systems
to list of TAC-accredited programs
The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) is thinking
big by going microscopically small with the newest addition
to its list of nationally accredited technology programs. The
institute's nanotechnology systems program brings NAIT's
number of nationally accredited programs to 13.
The nanotechnology systems program has now been
accredited by Technology Accreditation Canada (TAC).
According to the team of C.E.T.s that performed the audit,
the nanotech program is the first of its kind in Canada.
The program arms students with knowledge across a wide
range of disciplines, like electronics and controls, materials
science, chemistry and biochemistry. The education expands
outside the classroom, allowing students to work in a "clean
room" facility.
This facility, as well as the program's other lab, gives students
the chance to get a practical, hands-on education. According
to the page for the program, "[students] gain lab experience
and clean room protocols through hands-on sessions in our
specialized labs and at partner institutions at the University
of Alberta and the Edmonton Research Park."
The page says that given recent investments in nanotechnology in Alberta, the province could soon be the
beating heart of Canada's nanotechnology industry.
TAC accreditation means an engineering technology or
applied science program has been assessed against and
aligned with the national standards of the engineering
technology profession. This means that the program in
question follows current best practices used in the field
and has a stronger connection to the resources within its
industry.
