" Since 2009, we've helped companies
bring to market their electronics, optics,
mechanical, embedded, and other advanced
technology systems in multiple industry
sectors, including energy, health, intelligent
transportation and aerospace, " Brizel says.
These systems include the realms of vehicle sensors, x-ray
machines and teeth alignment technology.
" One of them is a company called SmileSonica. And so they
make a medical device that's used for people with orthodontics, "
Brizel says. The company uses therapeutic ultrasound
technology to speed up the process of teeth repositioning
using braces. ACAMP helped the company's founder with
electronics design and packaging for their technology.
BC-based Redlen
Technologies
is
another
company
ACAMP has helped. Redlen's work developing components
for world-leading medical
imaging system manufacturers
has led to x-ray modules with higher resolution images that
provide 10x more information at lower patient dosage than
traditional CT systems.
ACAMP also assisted Soltare, the developer of a vehicular
microphone sensor system. ACAMP's advanced acoustic
modeling played a key part in completing the design.
The centre provided design and production support for iHear™,
Soltare's Emergency Vehicle Detection (EVD) technology.
" The basis of the technology is vehicular auditory awareness
using strategically placed microphones for siren detection, "
Brizel explains.
As well as its suite of specialists and high-end gear, ACAMP
offers innovators a dedicated space to develop their ideas, in
the form of the Incubator for Technology Startups (ITS). The
incubator is a collaboration between the Edmonton International
Airport (EIA) and the centre, and provides one year of
office space and mentorship to groups of graduating students
and young entrepreneurs.
There, the developers work within a tech cluster of likeminded
teams, and receive access to resources like fresh
market intel, seminars and workshops, and experienced industry
veterans.
Brizel says that admission into the ITS relies on a number of
factors. " They have to be smaller companies, typically three
or four founders. they need to be people who are dedicating
themselves fulltime to their start-up company, " he says.
In addition, prospective teams " can't be looking for other
work and doing this as a side job. It has to be their main focus
to be an entrepreneur. "
Ultimately, ACAMP operates best as part of an ecosystem of
innovation and industriousness - something of which Alberta
has no shortage.
" We've got a lot of talent here. And we have a lot of challenges
we have to overcome, that the world needs to know. So I think
it's just being one part of an ecosystem of mutually supporting
organizations, " Brizel says.
" ACAMP and ASET and all the different
support organizations work to make sure
that entrepreneurs with smart business
ideas want to stay in Alberta, to
commercialize their products. "
