Digital optimization of certain processes can also be achieved
through stronger software monitoring systems. Conor Howitt,
CEO and co-founder of EHT Group Ltd. (featured in last
month's employer spotlight) holds that better process monitoring
systems can improve on multiple valuable metrics.
EHT Group's SmartTrace software, which performs highly
precise electrical heat tracing monitoring, has revealed not
only economic savings potential, but increased environmental
performance possibilities, due to enhanced detection of
impending pipe freezes, bursts and spills.
" It's astonishing, as we've been engaging with more customers
here, to see how much power savings that we can realize, "
Howitt says. " It seems like the first necessary fix that
we've had to do with these facilities is get their monitoring
capabilities up before we can implement all of these management
changes. "
To fix this issue, Director of Research and Development at
EHT Group, Eric de la Chevrotiere, recently created a monitoring
software platform from scratch.
" Within the last six months, we essentially reimagined and
implemented a new monitoring platform. What this means is
that now sites can actually get a modern piece of software
technology, implement the monitoring piece, and then easily
tap into all the management features that we're doing with
SmartTrace, " Howitt explains. The fact that monitoring piece
had to be created, though, suggests a slow approach from
some producers to integrate cutting-edge tech.
Howitt says findings like this are common, due to prevailing
assumptions that traditional systems and their costs are an
unavoidable price. " How a facility is currently doing something
is probably our biggest competitor, because we're saying,
'Hey, you can do something different that has great benefit
to you, but you have to rethink how you're doing some
things,' " he says.
" They've got a sense that they can do it another
way, but they think that the effort to put into it
is going to be too great, or that they're going to
need dedicated teams on site to help manage
something, and they don't quite realize the
returns are as great as they are. "
