CONTROL SYSTEM MIGRATION is a process traditionally
done in one of two ways. One is to shut down the plant,
and perform the migration while the control system is offline.
From a capital cost perspective, this is the cheapest path, but
there's the matter of downtime costs that can add up quickly.
Another method is to do an online migration and move one
loop at a time, which allows systems to stay online, but has
limitations and can add a lot of complexity to the project.
TEMPUS, a new solution from CIMA+, takes the best from
both worlds, maintaining the simplicity and reliability of offline
migration, but with the benefits of retaining full control
for uninterrupted plant operation. Now being utilized across
Canada and the US, TEMPUS serves as a kind of handoff
point between a plant's old system and new.
Findlay came up with the idea for TEMPUS one day while
working on a traditional control system migration for a
customer of CIMA+ in Fort McMurray. As that process became
increasingly unwieldy and complicated, he reflected
on how better to conduct such an operation - one that was
cheaper, more reliable and less risky. Starting its life as a
napkin sketch, TEMPUS steadily evolved with new features
to check off these boxes. It premiered as a wholly unique
solution to a cumbersome problem.
The system itself works through a temporary hardware
installation, a small blue square module, that facilitates
online migrations. The modules are installed in parallel to
both the existing system and the new one. Modules are
installed just before system swingover, and removed immediately
after the new system's commissioning process
is complete. The solution works by using pierce probes, allowing
it to gain continuity with the existing system without
disrupting its signals.
