ASET partners with ECO Canada to
provide project management training
Bill 23 leaves many details to the professionspecific
regulations and schedules which will be
developed before its proclamation. The period
between passing the bill and proclamation will require
a large amount of regulatory work but also
provides a massive opportunity for technologists
to have a say in the future of their profession.
ASET has been regulating its members to a high
standard of ethics, knowledge standards, education
requirements and professional discipline for
nearly 60 years. On behalf of our members, ASET
has been and will continue to work with the government
to ensure that the high level of certification
and qualifications that ASET members voluntarily
adhere to will be protected and advanced
through the Professional Governance Act.
The curriculum for a technologist designation is
approved and funded by the province and it follows
that these qualifications should be protected
through a legislated scope of practice. A defined
scope of practice would include a clear indication
of what technologists are qualified and have
permission to do. It would also regulate who can
call themselves engineering or applied science
technologists, thereby protecting the public from
those who are unqualified and misrepresenting
their capabilities. Alberta's legislation should
respect the education that Alberta funds, develops,
and approves, and respect the technologist
profession which has been and continues to be
integral to the safety and the economic viability
of Alberta.
