Like Divyesh Patel, other foreign-trained engineers and engineering technology professionals new to this country and
province have received a characteristically warm Canadian
welcome from ASET, not to mention concrete practical support. In many circumstances, their careers have been jumpstarted by ASET certification.
Mark Lopez, a facility integrity analyst, came to Canada from
Batangas City, Philippines in 2009 with the hope of building
a better future for himself. His father had died and, as the eldest, he took on the responsibility of providing for his family.
"My mom and I teamed up so that my five younger siblings
could finish school," said Lopez.
He didn't know anyone in Canada other than a friend from
high school who lived in Fort McMurray, which had an only
four per cent unemployment rate at the time. He decided to
go there. With a bachelor of science in physical therapy and
an interest in industrial engineering, he found it tough to find
relevant employment, and initially worked as a quality assurance/quality control technical assistant. He relocated to Edmonton in 2012 when he was hired by Suncor Energy.
"It was very difficult finding work when I arrived in Alberta.
Without a local organization backing one up, the likelihood
of landing a job in line with your credentials is very low,"
said Lopez. "It's made even harder by the fact that the competition for employment includes locally educated professionals who would have learned first-hand the professional
practice governing laws."
A representative from the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) referred him to
ASET. While based in Edmonton, Lopez was able to attain a
bachelor of science in industrial engineering in 2015 from his
university in the Philippines through the Philippines government expanded tertiary education equivalency and accreditation program. That paved the way to his earning his C.E.T.,
which he says helped him a lot as it qualified him for consideration for better work positions.
For Lopez, the most challenging part of living in Alberta is
also the best: being part of a community of really driven,
competitive and courageous people.
