sports, because during my time at RDC, I was on the mixed
curling team, which required a commitment to training and
competition.
Kyle: I first heard about this program from my cousin, a
professor at the University of Alberta. I gained interest with
further research into the field and additional career path exploration. I also had recommendation from friends and family familiar with that industry. They felt it had potential for
expansion and growth. Since I am a Red Deer resident, we
felt RDC was the perfect choice for my schooling, particularly given its new Instrumentation Engineering Technology
Program. I believe the courses I took gave me the hands-on
experience and background knowledge necessary to pursue a fruitful career.

Our Capstone Project
The Mechanical Engineering Technologist Program includes a second-semester fluid dynamics class, as well
as a course on fluid and bulk materials class in the third
term. The Instrumentation Engineering Technology Program
also includes a similar class during third semester, during
which students are introduced to fluid dynamics. One of the
learnings for both groups includes how to perform calculations on the pressure drop of fluids within piping systems.
However, students cannot observe what the actual pressure drop looks like. Our trainer helps would-be mechanical and instrumentation engineering technologists observe
and understand how the fluid flow, diameter, and material
of the piping will cause a noticeable pressure drop within
the system.

The purpose of this project is to develop and construct a
portable and fully functional trainer that accurately demonstrates the pressure drop of three separate pipes of the
same material, but with different diameters (1/2", 3/8" and
1/4"). Additionally, the fluid flow is adjustable by means of
the main block and by-pass valves. Users can isolate each
branch by the provided block valves upstream and downstream of any particular branch. The temperature of the
fluid, as well as upstream and downstream pressures for
each line, are provided on the display of the control panel.
Accomplishing this project, the participant students demonstrated following skills learned at RDC:
* Project management (planning, executing,
and monitoring/controlling);
* Fluid mechanics (pressure drop calculations);
* Mechanical component sizing;
* Micro controller programing;
* Electrical wiring;
* Fabrication; and,
* Testing and commissioning.
