A large appeal of VR arcades comes from consumers
getting a chance to try the tech without having to purchase
a home setup. Image courtesy of Ctrl V.
Besides age-old arenas like sports and stage, newer, seemingly
more ephemeral environments like the arcade have
installed new toys like virtual reality. At these spaces, the
arcade can leverage their specific environment to reciprocally
enhance those toys.
James Elligson is the chief operating officer of Ctrl V, which
specializes in virtual reality arcades. At these locations people
can play VR games with each other in large groups, and
without taking a hit to the pocketbook from purchasing their
own equipment. Since the company's inauguration in Waterloo
in 2016, they've opened up locations across Canada
and the US, and have had questions pouring in from others
hoping to break into VR arcades before even opening their
doors. In response to ravenous interest, the bootstrapped
company soon franchised.
At Ctrl V's arcades, time and again Elligson has seen how
immersed customers can get in VR environments, something
he guesses partially comes from the 360 degree, allencompassing
view of the environment users have. This is
most noticeable in horror/haunted house VR experiences,
in which Elligson has seen users break out in tears, shriek in
terror and throw their arms around defensively.
" I've picked up people off the floor, girls [with] mascara running
down their face, trembling! They just feel it's so real, "
Elligson says.
While VR within the home is an option, Elligson points out
some key advantages that as of right now are mostly limited
to the arcade: first, having a dedicated space to play.
Many don't have the luxury of a dedicated VR area in their
homes, especially in large congested urban areas. Finding a
spot large enough to move around in once the goggles are
on could be an impediment to someone in a one-bedroom
apartment, or who's sharing a space with roommates, for
example.
The biggest draw of all to these
arcades, though, comes from the
ability to play together. " The ability to
connect with all of your friends and
your family together in one virtual
environment at the same time, that's
what sets us apart with VR arcades,
not just Ctrl V, " Elligson says.
" In the arcade, you can show up with uncle Steve, Grandpa
Joe, your own family, your own friends, your own corporate
employees, colleagues and such, and you can hook up all
together in the same virtual world, and I think that's the big
differentiator, " he says. " Together, you guys can go through
these virtual worlds and slay dragons, zombies, go to places
you've never been, and so many options. "
As the offerings of entertainment outings evolve,
in the
background production processes of intellectual properties
(IP), the distributed database system of blockchain is being
explored as a way to increase transparency between different
stakeholders.
