FRIDAY, APRIL 19, 2013
All too often, well-intentioned people in health
care institutions choose not to speak up when
they are concerned with behavior, decisions, or
actions of a colleague.

FUTURE OF MEDICAL EDUCATION IN
CANADA SYMPOSIUM
Past studies have indicated that more than 60%
of medication errors are caused by mistakes in
interprofessional communication. Based on
ongoing research, VitalSkills® builds on these
findings by exploring the specific concern that
people have a hard time communicating, which
may contribute to avoidable errors and other
chronic problems in health care. VitalSkills®
found that seven categories of conversations are
especially difficult and, at the same time, appear
to be especially essential for people in health
care to master – including broken rules,
mistakes, lack of support, incompetence, poor
teamwork, disrespect, and micromanagement.
