Brian Sprout pring Wine Fest Kicks Off See you at the finish line! | BY HOLLY M IYAS AK I S pring is in the air, and not just blossoms are opening — wineries are also opening their doors and uncorking new releases in time for the season. And where better to get a taste of everything at once than at the Okanagan Spring Wine Festival? The 10-day event extends up and down the Okanagan Valley offering visitors — from the connaisseur with specific tastes to those new to the joy of wine — with a diverse sundry of events. Whether it’s learning the ins and outs of creating a very special wine at Icewine Discovery Tours in the South Okanagan or tasting unique two-course meal creations matched with select Okanagan wines, there’s something to appeal to those with a penchant for wine, food and more. Those new to the festival (one of four held annually in the Southern Interior) can get started at the B.C. Wine Info Centre in Penticton, which has new spring releases, awardwinners, winery pricing, daily complimentary tastings and accessories like wine books, cookbooks, local culinary treats and journals to take on tasting adventures. The kickoff to the festival will be held at Kelowna’s Eldorado Hotel, where the award-winning wines from the 2009 Best of Varietal Judging Competition will take place. This unique competition utilizes local winemakers’ knowledge as they judge and reveal their favourite fellow vintners. Following the announcement will be a reception including fabulous tapas and canapés and the opportunity to be one of the few to taste the winners’ vintages. During the 10 days there are also countless opportunities to take in local arts and culture with events like Red, Whites and Blues, which features amazing blues performances in an intimate cabaret setting which complements Okanagan wines paired with a delectable menu. Artists Paul Keating and John Ferrie will be featured at Okanagan Falls’ Tangled Vines winery, which is planning to share newly released wines. Less than an hour away, Kelowna’s Rotary Centre for the Arts is hosting WAM, a free late-night event with artist studios and galleries and a live performance by the Michael Garding group. Specialty drinks, local wine and artisan gelato adds a special touch the event. Don’t forget one of the festival’s most popular events — the WestJet Wine Tastings at 20 YLW CONNECTION
