DFCPROMOTION By Geneviève Fontaine Grand champions DFC ‘s annual cheese grand prix attracts the best in Canadian cheesemakers he Canadian Cheese Grand Prix, organized by DFC every two years, spotlights the high-quality and vast range of Canadian cheeses and contributes to the development of the Canadian cheese market. It helps give cheesemakers coveted visibility on the Canadian stage, along with greater retail opportunities locally and nationally. For winners and finalists, the national media relations campaign and associated publicity serves as an important commercial stepping stone and marketing venue. In February, jurors from across the country gathered in Montreal for an exhaustive two-day cheese tasting session. Tasting criteria included body, texture, smell, flavour, salt content, appearance and colour. Cheeses had to be made with 100 per cent Canadian cows’ 22 | June 2009 | MilkPRODUCER T milk or 100 per cent Canadian modified milk ingredients to qualify. Contestants could enter their cheeses into 17 different categories, including the retail packaging design category. A total of 41 Canadian cheesemakers submitted 172 cheeses. This year’s Grand Champion is Kénogami from Fromagerie Lehmann in Quebec. A winner in the washed-rind division, Kénogami cheese has an aroma of mild herbs and a creamy, buttery, nutty flavour. It is made from the cheesemaker’s own cows’ milk. The Lehmann family has been producing cheese on their small family-owned and operated farm in Lac-Saint-Jean since 1983.
