NEW’N’NOTED Genomic testing service launched Seal up your bunker silos GenoID combines genomic testing with herdbook registration to provide a convenient, one-step process for parentage discovery and genetic evaluation for Holstein breeders. Genetic evaluations provide you with valuable information to make better selection, mating and sales decisions. This service will also automatically register your animals in the Holstein Canada Herdbook. GenoID is geared toward non-registered herds but available to all Holstein breeders. It provides more accurate information for faster genetic improvement. It works best on herds using AI sires since they are already genotyped and included in the genomic database. Holstein Canada has also announced a GenoID Incentive Program for breeders who have not been registering animals for two or more years. This will give new customers a chance to evaluate the benefits of the GenoID program over a 12-month period. The fee for animals tested on this program will be $50 for low-density genotyping and herdbook registration. “We have very accurate and useful genetic evaluation services in Canada and producers are highly supportive of our genetic improvement tools,” says Brian Van Doormaal, Holstein Canada chief operating officer. “GenoID opens doors to new potential customers and will help increase the rate of genetic progress made by Canadian Holsteins.” For complete program information, visit www.holstein.ca. Sysilco automated bunk closure sealing system S uperior Mat and Comfort Inc. has introduced the Sysilco Automated Closure System for bunker silos. Designed to overcome obstacles associated with bunker silo covering and storage, the system has been in use for six years in the Netherlands. A cover with waterlines filled with a non-toxic glycol solution seals and provides weight over the bunk and feed face—replacing tires, plastic and gravel bags. The liquid is stored in a bladder or tank near the bunker. Available for a number of bunker configurations, the system is designed with the single operator in mind. It is made up of a reusable, high-quality cover and a self-winding reel that can be mounted on the wall of the bunk or at ground level for silage piles. The mechanized drive system can uncover and recover most bunkers in less than half an hour by a handheld remote device and a self-winding reel. Benefits of this automated closure system include: • Labour efficiency. A single open-and-close operation reduces labour costs; • Minimum exposure of feed. More timely closure ensures fermentation commences quickly; • Layered storage. An opportunity to fill your storage by cut layers to provide consistent forage throughout the year; • Biosecurity. High-quality cover keeps feed from avian contamination and deters rodents; • High-quality product. Reduction of dry matter loss by limiting exposure, including feed face, to rain and snow. An open house to demonstrate the product is being held July 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Aart Muilwijk Family Farms, 203306 Keswick Rd., Brownsville, Ont.
