DAIRYUPDATE Agreement reached Key industry players find workable solution to issues raised over U.S. yogurt processor initiative T he Ontario Dairy Council has withdrawn both its appeals regarding the construction permit and supply of milk granted to AgroFarma Canada Inc. Dairy Farmers of Ontario and the ODC are pleased the industry was able to find a workable solution to the issues raised in the appeals, says Graham Lloyd, DFO’s general counsel. The ODC, DFO and the Ontario Farm Products Marketing Commission worked together to achieve an outcome that is in the best interest of the dairy industry, he says. In November 2011, DFO supported a request by Agro-Farma Canada, which makes Chobani brand of Greek-style yogurt, to provide it with a milk allocation to supply a proposed new plant near Kingston, Ont. In February, Ontario dairy processors, represented by the ODC, appealed OMAFRA’s decision to grant the permit for plant construction to the Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Appeal Tribunal. At the same time, the ODC appealed DFO’s decision to allocate a supply of milk to the processor. DFO always fully supported resolving issues through an open, independent and transparent review, and consulting with government and industry 8 | July 2012 | MilkPRODUCER In terms of the total national milk market, yogurt uses about four per cent of the total 7.5 billion litres of milk produced annually. stakeholders, says Lloyd. “This result furthers DFO’s commitment to a growth strategy in the Ontario dairy sector.” Yogurt plays an important role in the Canadian market, say DFO economists. It contributes mainly on the solids non-fat side, although it has contributed some butterfat usage to overall quota growth. In terms of the total national milk market, yogurt production across Canada uses about 320 million litres of milk annually. This translates to about four per cent of the total 7.5 billion litres produced nationally.
