STRATA A GREEN ROOF FOR A COUNTY COURTHOUSE UNDETERRED WHEN ALL THE BIDS FOR A GREEN ROOF CAME IN WELL ABOVE AVAIL ABLE BUDGET STAFF FOR THE MINNEAPOLIS CITY HALL AND HENNEPIN COUNTY COURTHOUSE GOT CREATIVE AND THAT INCLUDED ACQUIRING PRIVATE PARTNERS By Jose Cervantes n 2004, the Minneapolis City Hall and Hennepin County Courthouse (mbc) planned to waterproof its 15,000-square-foot interior court roofs. In anticipation of this project, the MBC Board directed staff to research the feasibility of integrating a green roof into the waterproofing project. Not surprisingly, the MBC staff was initially skeptical about the green roof idea because of its downtown location and difficult site conditions. To better prepare itself, MBC staff conducted research on green roofs which included visiting Chicago to see their many green roofs. The research ultimately identified significant potential for a green roof and stormwater management system on the historic mbc courthouse building. The project elements that were initially included were a combination green roof with a flowing stream, two 10,000 gallon cisterns, gravity-fed irrigation misters, solar electric generation and a weather station. One of the main goals of the project was to demonstrate sustainable building practices to the public and private businesses utilizing interpretive signage and the web. An initial design was developed, and an rfp issued, but when bids were received, all were well above available budget. I 10 LIVING ARCHITECTURE MONITOR FALL
