STRATA RESEARCH GRANT FOR DESIGN TOOL USGBC TO SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW GREEN ROOF ENERGY CALCULATOR rofessor David Sailor, Professor at the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Portland State University (psu) in Oregon has received a grant from the U.S. Green Building Council (usgbc) to develop a green roof energy calculator. The usgbc’s Green Building Research Fund was created to spur research that will advance sustainable building practices and encourage market transformation. The funding was the result of a proposal jointly submitted by three partners: Green Roofs for Healthy Cities, psu and University of Toronto. P The goal of this project is to create an easy-touse design tool that real estate developers, engineers and architects can use to assess the building energy-use implications of green roof design decisions. The energy calculator will be designed to quantify energy savings of specific green roofs designs in different regions of North America. This work is very timely in that green roofs have been shown to compare favorably with white “cool” roofs for summer air conditioning demand, and outperform white roofs with respect to winter time heating demand. Currently, however, market penetration of green roofs in most North Ameri- can markets is relatively low, due in some part to the inability of key decision-makers to access quantitative information regarding the energy performance of green roof constructions, which in turn increases the uncertainty of any total benefits and life-cycle costing estimates. To carry out this work Professor Sailor will be working in collaboration with Drs.
