POLICY LEADING BY EXAMPLE HOW CHICAGO, PORTLAND, MINNEAPOLIS, BOSTON, BALTIMORE AND WASHINGTON, D.C. ARE SUPPORTING THE GROWTH OF LIVING ARCHITECTURE s Green Roofs for Healthy Cities prepares for its 8th Annual International Greening Rooftops for Sustainable Cities Conference, Awards and Trade Show in Vancouver, British Columbia next year (Nov. 30th to Dec. 2nd, 2010), we look to the past to see what progress cities that have previously hosted our event — Chicago, Portland, Minneapolis, Boston, Washington, D.C. and Baltimore — have made toward greening their communities through living architecture. Right from beginning, we envisioned our conference would serve as a catalyst for the development of the green roof industry and a more sustainable world. By partnering with local policymakers, landscape architects, architects, developers, academics, government, roofers, roofing consultants and other professionals, we cultivate the green roof and wall industry from the grassroots up. The result is a legacy of strong, committed networks of individuals and organizations who continue to collaborate toward a common goal – a healthier community – long after the conference ends. Here in this special report, we include insight and lessons learned from the public green roof policymakers from the six visionary cities who have cohosted our event in years past. As you will see, tremendous progress has been made, with every jurisdiction doing things a little bit differently; a reminder that when it comes to policymaking, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. We hope you enjoy learning from these leaders and join us in celebrating their accomplishments.
