At one prospective college visit I asked my tour guide if their college had a green roof. He nodded vigorously “yes” and proudly pointed to a painted green metal roof. This was an “Aha” moment for me. Realizing that there was a need for education about green roofs and their benefits, I decided to LIVING ARCHITECTURE MONITOR M create a green roof educational display for my Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting. My display contains a board that focuses on the benefits of green roofs, how they are constructed, costs, pictures, FAQs, etc. In addition, there is a living green roof module with a cut-out cross-section. I also have a website with information from my project and links for green roof resources. My travelling green roof exhibit debuted at the 7th Annual Greening Rooftops for Sustainable Communities Conference, Awards and Trade Show this past June in Atlanta. It has since been to a local eco-fair and shown to Sarasota County water management officials. The exhibit is on its way for display at the Girl Scouts of Gulf Coast Florida head quarters and in Sarasota County office buildings. It has already reached over 200 people. The best part of talking to people about green roofs is watching their expressions change as FALL 2009
