Members of Green Roofs for Healthy Cities’ Accreditation Exam Development Committee completed their final review of the Green Roof Professional (GRP) accreditation exam, completing more than six years of professional development work. In 2003, at the first ever Greening Rooftops for Sustainable Communities Conference held in Chicago, industry members expressed a clear desire and need for the development of multidisciplinary green roof training courses and a practical means to acknowledge design and installation expertise in the marketplace. Since then, it has been my pleasure to lead GRHC’s Training & Accreditation Committee through a process that has led us to the Green Roof Professional (GRP) accreditation. The first Green Roof Professional (GRP) exam will be launched in Atlanta on June 5th, 2009 at the 7th Annual Greening Rooftops for Sustainable Communities Conference, Awards and Trade Show. To register for the inaugural accreditation exam, see www.greenroofs.org/atlanta. I have worked with many of you in the development of several full-day training courses, most notably Design and Installation 201 and Plants and Growing Media 401. During that time, roofing industry experts were also brought together to “ develop Waterproofing and Drainage 301. Together with Design 101, these courses provide an unmatched depth and breadth of industry knowledge and experience. In 2007, we assembled a multidisciplinary committee of subject matter experts to establish Occupational Standards for Green Roof Professionals, with a focus on identifying the key knowledge and expertise for green roof design, installation and maintenance across disciplines. Successful green roofers require a combination of knowledge and expertise in the so-called ‘black-’ and ‘green-arts.’ Critical, non-living elements of a green roof assembly such as waterproofing, structural engineering and project management are the focus of the black arts, while the green arts deal with living architectural components such as water management, growing media, plants and maintenance. Very few industry professionals currently have the necessary knowledge and expertise encompassing these many disciplines. Green Roof Professionals (GRPs) will be well versed in both black and green arts in order to gain this new professional distinction of green-building expertise. GRPs may come from many professions and sectors including architects, landscape architects, landscape designers, engineers, contractors, horticulturalists, manufacturers and roofing consultants, to name just a few. With this new accreditation, GRPs will: • Identify and pull the project team together. • Function as a team leader for the green roof portion of a project. • Understand the different options for green roof design and implementation. • Maximize the benefits of green roofs during the design process (i.e. by LIVING ARCHITECTURE MONITOR SPRING 33 http://www.greenroofs.org/atlanta
