GIF ROAD SHOW AFTER TESTING IN MINNEAPOLIS, THE GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE FOUNDATION IS READY TO ROLL OUT ITS HALF-DAY WORKSHOP IN 12 NORTH AMERICAN CITIES “Federal and local funding in the U.S. and Canada is clearly moving in the direction of restoring ecological function to urban infrastructure through more environmentally conscious design and construction.” Michael Krause, chair, Green Infrastructure Foundation (GIF) Board half-day workshop focused on policies, design features and case studies of green-infrastructure strategies had its prototype presentation late April in Minneapolis and is now ready to roll out to 12 other cities in the United States and Canada over the coming months. The workshop, a project of the Green Infrastructure Foundation, is based on an extensive green infrastructure manual that includes model ordinances and best practices. It was developed with funding support from the Home Depot Foundation. The workshop and manual was extensively reviewed by green infrastructure proponents and practitioners, and it includes the powerful context for green infrastructure as a tool for conserving energy, managing stormwater and mitigating the effects of climate change in urban areas. The workshop also looks in detail at some common elements of green infrastructure such as urban forests, green streets, bioswales, rain gardens and permeable paving systems, as well as green walls and green roofs. It connects green A infrastructure to public investment plans, urban food systems, affordable housing and renewable energy development. “Federal and local funding in the U.S. and Canada is clearly moving in the direction of restoring ecological function to urban infrastructure through more environmentally conscious design and construction,” says Michael Krause, chair of the Foundation’s board. He added that now is a critical time for policymakers and practitioners alike to enhance their understanding and skills in the use of green infrastructure.
